What Makes Me Care So Much?

I am a technology evangelist. And I think there was a bit of an evolution to how I got that way. Yes, I’m a geek at heart. But, there is more…

I got started with computers when I was very young. My first computer was a 286 laptop by Packard Bell. Today, there are calculators more powerful than this thing! In those days, I was all about tinkering with the computer. I learned the DOS command line and was using a bunch of DOS programs. Then I got into the world of Windows, starting with Windows 3.1. This was a paradigm shift. My computers gradually became more powerful over time. I was a hobbyist PC builder and I built every PC I used and this hobby is what drove me into creating PCMech.com.

See, at this point, I was also getting involved in the Internet. A magazine article about creating a website got me interested in doing so, and I created my first website on the little space my internet service provider gave me. That small, hobbyist website eventually turned into what was then called PC Mechanic.

The hobby continued and this website grew. I brought on writers from around the country with similar interests and the site grew even more. I was going to college at this point, getting a degree in Information Systems Management at the University of South Florida.

This was a point of change. PCMech grew to a point where it was actually making money. Not only that, the world of technology was evolving to a point where computers were not the only thing relevant. Mobile phones became more prominent. The Internet was more a daily component of everyday living. When I graduated from college, I was one of the very few people who was NOT looking for a job! I had one: I was working for myself and using the Internet to make a living.

I had come full circle. I went from a hobbyist computer user to a person who put all of this technology to full advantage to make a living. Fast forward a few more years. There I am sitting in the hospital with my beautiful wife. She is in labor about to give birth to our first child, Elyana. There was a moment, while she was in labor, where I was sitting there in silence as she rested. I was thinking how fortunate I am to be able to provide for my new family without working a 9-5 job. I am able to pay for the birth of my child. I am able to afford to have my wife be a stay-at-home mother for our baby. All while being a professional blogger! I mean, that’s just surreal.

I have been operating this popular technology blog for over 10 years. PCMECH has received media coverage from the likes of PC World, PC Magazine, Computer Shopper, the Wall Street Journal…even Playboy!
